GUIDING MISSION

The objection of the Academy School reflects a commitment to the development and education of the whole child.
This approach acknowledges that each child has unique strengths to be developed and limitations to be addressed.

These objectives include: Providing a safe and engaging learning environment with many opportunities for student
success; designing and implementing an IEP tailored to each student’s unique educational needs, behavioral
characteristics, and future direction; setting up an environment where each student can be successful; discovering
and creatively developing each child’s communication talents…teaching and practicing real-world functional life
skills…developing community resources as liaisons.

INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

The Academy School utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to education and adapts to the needs and strengths of
each student.  The program is highly individualized, innovative and flexible, so that students have every opportunity
to succeed.

One-to-one as well as small group participation, during which hands-on learning techniques are employed to assist
each student in moving forward.  Is offered at the Academy School.

School staff believe that students should be taught functional skills within the settings in which skills will be
demonstrated. Home and community, in addition to the classroom setting are appropriate environments for targeted
skill instruction. We work to improve each child’s quality of life with the goal being to become as independent as
possible.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

The Academy School is committed to providing a continuum of services for both school and home setting. Family
and other care-providers participation is essential and is actively encouraged. Support and instruction in home
management skills for families of students with challenging behaviors will be offered.

SOCIAL SKILLS

The Academy School seeks to change the environment to modify behaviors that may keep students from
participating in a variety of social/community settings.

Curriculum that utilizes systematic, sequential instruction based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis is
utilized.  Areas of focus include: Learning effective ways to communicate needs. Improving problem solving
skills…Learning about boundaries and rules.  Striving to work to have positive group experience.
